Microsoft Buckeye Bundle - Office Enterprise 2007 and Windows
Vista Enterprise

These products will be available on Tuesday, Jan. 16 to
faculty/staff holders of Buckeye Bundle 2 licenses for on-campus
installation. You will obtain upgrade media at Uniprint, 2005
Millikin Rd. (Tuttle Parking Garage). Please note that currently
Vista is available only on DVD media. These upgrades are not
available to students or for faculty/staff home installation
(Work-at-Home rights) until April because Student Media is not
yet available.

Special Note on Vista and License Activation
You will not receive a Volume License Product Key to activate
Vista as you did with Windows XP when you obtain your Select
volume-licensed media. This is because Microsoft is implementing
a new volume activation procedure for Windows Vista for use with
volume-licensed media. Microsoft is concerned about Software
Piracy and the new procedure is expected to close piracy
loopholes.
With the new activation procedure, there are two types of keys
that are used:
Multiple Activation Key (MAK) - This type of key is resident on
individual computers but is encrypted so users are not exposed to
it. This type of key might be good for an isolated lab where
security policy does not allow any traffic between computers in
the lab and the rest of the OSU network. It is also use when
client PCs do not connect to the OSU network for more than 210
days. This might be the case of an extended absence from OSU, but
while using an OSU-owned computer. Computers with a MAK key
activation do not need to be connected to a network to maintain
activation.
Key Activation Service (KMS) - This key is installed only on a
KMS host server and never on individual computers. Vista copies
using this type of activation are expected to be on the vast
majority of OSU campus computers. They are computers that would
normally be connected to the campus network. Vista activation for
a OSU network-connected PC will follow automatically after
installation of Vista. This is why most users will not need an
activation key.
When Student Media becomes available for student installation or
faculty/staff for at-home installation, that media will continue
to be INDIVIDUALLY keyed and limited as to the number of
installations.
Please note that if you have an OSU machine using the volume-
licensed media which you feel might need a MAK license key, that
you will contact your departmental IT support staff or Department
Network Administrator to discuss your needs.
For further questions on Vista Activation, please contact your
departmental IT support staff or your DNA, or the OIT Support
Center at 688-help, 8help@osu.edu.
Many thanks go to an ad hoc group which formed a test team for
Vista activation implementation: Brian Keller, Brian Newcomb, Tim
Timberman and Bruce Woltman, with OIT Help Desk support from
Kevin Balogh.
