SOFTWARE: NVivo Version 8 for Windows

Description: NVivo is a specialized package for use in Qualitative Data Analysis. This package is available through a volume license purchase by the Office of Information Technology. Its strengths inlude:

• This is a new generation of QDA software tools, allowing fine-detail analysis, fluid exploration and interpretation, integrating the processes of interpretation and questioning.
• Context annotating of text or discourse, hyperlinking to other texts or multimedia data.
• NVivo has many ways of recording the links between data and ideas that go beyond coding.

NVivo 8 has an interface that’s similar to Office 2007 and this new edition offers the following enhancements:

• Import, sort and analyze virtually any piece of information in any language, from videos, interview recordings and documents, to digital photos, media clips, podcasts and even music.
• Work with transcripts or work without them, analyzing material straight from audio and video files. You can even create transcripts or text files within the software as you go.
• Merge separate projects and still identify which work was completed by which person, as well as view the notes and analysis completed by each team member.
• Share files and findings, including audio, video or sections of documents with clients or colleagues who don’t have NVivo, using HTML web pages.
• Query the analysis completed by individuals or teams and run comparisons to show the percentage of analysis that is the same or different across users.

NVivo 8 combines innovation with the best features of QSR's pragmatic, robust workhorse N6 and flexible, fluid analysis tool NVivo 2. NVivo 8 opens projects from previous versions of QSR software - N4, N5, N6, NVivo 1, NVivo2 and NVivo 7.

Changing the computer clock for anything other than daylight saving changes or minor time adjustments will cause the software to expire.

PLATFORM: PC at 1.2 GHz or better.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Windows 2000 (SP 4 or later)/XP SP 2/Vista SP1; 512 MB RAM; 1 GB hard disk depending on components installed, monitor with at least 1280 x 1024 resolution.

ELIGIBILITY: Faculty and staff. Software may also be installed in student labs.

RESTRICTIONS: The software may used on the main and regional campuses and on your personally owned computer.

PURCHASE: The software may be purchased in OIT Customer Services, 512 Baker Systems, with OSU funds (e.g., 100-W) only. The cost per copy is $33 for one license and the media. The cost of a license only is $28. This will allow you to use the software until April of 2009 at which time you will pay a fee for the next year if you wish to continue using the software.

COST WITHOUT SITE LICENSE ARRANGEMENTS: No direct comparison can be made as this is an annual subscription license. The educational price for a perpetual license copy of NVivo is $595.

DISTRIBUTION METHOD: The software is distributed in Customer Services, 512 Baker Systems. The media is CD-ROM.

DOCUMENTATION: When the splash screen comes up during installation, you may navigate to the CD drive directory to see the NVivo "Getting Started Guide" which contains detailed installation instructions.
