Media Exchange policy ended at IT Service Desk (posted 9/21/09)
On Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, OIT will cease to require the exchange of a CD or DVD for software media obtained at the IT Service Desk. OIT Site Licensing is moving toward web-based distribution for most products via OSU SLS at this time, and will begin to lower available stocks of media that are on-hand. Over time, OIT Site Licensing will begin to move to a different physical distribution model, involving USB and flash memory drives. Until then, CD and DVD distribution will continue, but associated charges will be removed.
We expect special cases to arise in the near future that will require the purchase of media: MacOS X 10.6 will have a media charge because OIT is bound by agreement to purchase, not duplicate, the media. Additionally, as we move toward USB distribution, there may be charges associated with purchasing a USB drive from the IT Service Desk.
Some products will continue to be available only on physical CD or DVD media in the near and long term, depending on size and complexity of distribution.
Please check the OIT Site Licensed Software Directory for any media charges that may be associated with software you may wish to purchase: http://oit.osu.edu/site_license/
All licensing fees currently in effect remain unchanged. These changes apply only to media distribution.
