Changes to the OSU Buckeye Bundle and Planning Notes
The current Microsoft Campus Agreement, distributed at Ohio State as the Buckeye Bundle 2, ends on June 30, 2007. A team representing academic clusters and major VP areas was convened to study options for continuing with the Campus Agreement and to recommend options. These recommendations have been reviewed and approved by the university administration and will result in three major changes, effective July 1:
1. Funding for the Buckeye Bundle for university owned equipment will be done through a campus-wide assessment. This means that the department's costs for their faculty and staff and lab computers will be paid annually. Users will not have to pay a license fee for individual copies of the Buckeye Bundle for university owned equipment. There will still be a nominal fee to obtain the CD and DVD media for departmental installations.
2. The content of the Buckeye Bundle is being set to Windows Upgrades, Office Enterprise (Windows or Macintosh) and the CORE CAL (the CORE CAL provides legal authenticated access to various Microsoft servers, such as Windows, Exchange). This means that FrontPage and Visual Studio Pro are no longer provided on the Buckeye Bundle after June 30.
Departments that had deployed Visual Studio Pro and/or FrontPage on Buckeye Bundle 1, before July 1, 2004, may continue to run those versions. The highest level versions you may run from a Buckeye Bundle 1 license are shown below:
Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional for Windows FrontPage 2003
Any copies of Visual Studio Pro or FrontPage installed by departments after June 30, 2004 under a Buckeye Bundle 2 license must be removed from university owned equipment, or replaced with licensed copies of these products by July 1, 2007.
3. Students will no longer be covered on the Student Option of the Campus Agreement. Students will be able to obtain Microsoft software at attractive prices under the Student Select Option of OSU's companion license, Microsoft Select. These licenses will not include version upgrades, but the licenses will be perpetual licenses.
Departments that use FrontPage and/or Visual Studio Pro, obtained on Buckeye Bundle 2 after June 30, 2004, will need to review acquisition options if they intend to continue use. Orders should be completed by July 1, 2007. There are a couple of options:
- Departments (colleges) that need a product, such as Visual Studio, are able to complete their own Campus Agreement Enrollment under OSU's Campus Agreement. The purpose of this is to a) list the departments that will be using software ordered under this Enrollment and b) enumerate the full-time equivalency (FTE) for the faculty and staff in those departments. Once the Enrollment Agreement is completed, software would be ordered for those departments from the OSU reseller for our Campus Agreement. Contact Chuck Sechler, sechler.1@osu.edu, for more information.
- If only a few faculty/staff in a department require a product like FrontPage (or its follow-on product Office SharePoint Designer), a simpler approach might be to order that on the Microsoft Select license as individual copies. Contact information for OSU's current reseller is available on the Microsoft Licensing web site at

Students now use Buckeye Bundle 2 software on a subscription basis, which ends on June 30, 2007. If they are not graduating by June 30, they must remove that software from their computer. This was covered in their student acceptance form when they purchased the software. If they are graduating by June 30, they can apply at UniPrint to receive a perpetual license certificate for their software. This will be covered in more detail in information sent out to students separately.
Under Student Select, faculty and staff are currently able to purchase one copy of certain Microsoft software titles for personal use on their owned computer. This will continue to be offered. Current titles are shown at

Availability and pricing information regarding student purchases on Student Select will be announced in the near future.
Additional information on these changes and planning help for various audiences is being prepared and will be available over the next few weeks. The CIO Communications, Marketing and Planning group is coordinating an overall plan to provide this information.
