Procedures for Requesting OSU Homepage Link
or Web Server Space

Requesting a Link from the OSU Homepage

The homepage of a college, department, center, organization, or other OSU unit can be linked to the OSU homepage after the administrator of the unit submits a letter of request by e-mail to the OSU Webmaster. The letter of request must include acknowledgement that the administrator has reviewed the homepage and recognizes it as the official homepage representing the unit.

Colleges, Departments and other OSU Offices

OIT encourages colleges, departments, and offices, when possible, to maintain their own Web servers that are dedicated to that purpose and that have appropriate backup procedures and an uninterruptible power supply. However, OIT can help OSU colleges, departments, and other Ohio State offices initiate Web pages on the World Wide Web by providing Web server space. To apply for space on the OIT Web server, or for assistance in establishing your own Web server, send e-mail to OIT Web Administration.

Student Organizations

OIT provides space for student organizations that are registered with the Ohio Union and Student Activities Office, 211 Ohio Union.

NOTE: Every organization must renew registration with the Ohio Union and Student Activities office annually by October 15th. Registration is done solely at the web site below:

ohiounion.osu.edu

The Web pages of student organizations are intended to describe and represent the organization; they must not include any commercial advertising or the personal Web pages of members of the organization. A hard quota of 45 megabytes of space is alloted for these pages. To request Web space for your student organization, the senior officer of your organization must complete and submit the Student Organization Web Page Request Form. Information submitted with this form will be validated against current data in the Ohio Union and Student Activities office. If all the information is valid, the request will be processed; Web space will be assigned on the OSU Web server, an FTP account will be created, and the new Webmaster will be notified by e-mail of the account information. For more information on FTP accounts, contact the OIT Technology Support Center/Help Desk by e-mail to 8help@osu.edu or call 688-HELP.

Transferring Student Webmaster Accounts

Student Webmaster accounts must be owned and maintained by individuals currently associated with the university who hold a valid OSU Internet username. To transfer a Webmaster account to a new owner, a senior officer of the organization must submit the Student Organization Webmaster Transfer Request Form.

Individual Homepages

The Office of Information Technology is not able to provide server space for individual Web pages for faculty, staff, or students. Please contact your college or department to inquire if it is providing these services.
