Earnings Operations at OSU

Course Description:
There are several university departments that do not receive central funding, but instead earn their revenue from the sale of goods and/or services. In addition, many academic departments have earnings operations in addition to their centrally funded operations.
This course presents the rules and procedures used in managing a university earnings operation.
Topics include the following:
- Characteristics of Earnings Funds.
- University rules pertaining to Earnings Funds.
- Reading the relevant General Ledger reports.
- Recording revenues.
- Sales tax and Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT).
- Expenses.
- Accruals.
- Budgeting.
- Establishing Fees and Charges.
Prerequisites:
Debits and Credits, Accounting at OSU, and Using General Ledger Reports.
Course Length:
Two half-day sessions; the class is instructor-led, presented in a classroom setting.
Audience:
Any employee who uses an Earnings Fund should attend this course.
